Mission Project: Develop resting gardens for 1st walking track (2/22/10)
The 1st (of at least 2) walking track has been marked out with directional signs and has been in fairly regular use now for over a year. It is a 1/4 mile loop on the front side of the campus with good visibility for those who feel safer in an open (rather than woodland) environment. We strive to keep the grass mowed on the track, even when we are not able to get to the rest of the grounds.
The Walking Tracks are being developed as part of our community ministries. There are several aspects to this ministry. We are providing as a service to our community a relatively safe and convenient location for friends and families to walk together for good exercise and healthy recreation. It is also a non-threatening invitation to the community to come onto our campus. We prayerfully watch for opportunities to visit with people using the track.
The 2nd track will be somewhat longer (maybe as long as 1/2 mile) and will be mostly in the wooded area of the campus for those who want some privacy as they walk and meditate. It will eventually have wildflower gardens and marked colonies of wild herbs both for their aesthetic beauty and for the educational value, preserving the nature life knowledge of earlier generations of our community.
The 1st track is now in need of shaded rest areas with small flower gardens. We would envision such an area with some form of small roofed area (solid or slatted) with benches for up to 6 or 8 people with some sort of enjoyable planting for viewing from the benches. Such a rest area would provide a rest place for walkers and a place for peaceful meditation and prayer. It would also be a suitable place for a small prayer team to engage in prayer for the community and people in passing vehicles. We would also expect that there would be some degree of visitation and other ministry that would happen in this place.
A construction mission team is needed to design and construct the shelter. There would be continuing need for maintenance not only from weather exposure but also from some degree of anticipated vandalism over time.
A garden mission team is needed to design and create the planting(s) and perform periodic maintenance to keep the gardens up. (In essence, to adopt that spot.) Neverfail's team could take care of the simple week to week care such as watering when needed but the team adopting the spot would be responsible for seasonal care such as keeping the plantings fresh by season.
Additionally, Prayer teams would be encouraged to come and invest some prayer for this mission field. Briefings as to current needs would be provided for any team desiring to schedule such a trip. Our campus has cook-out facilities as well as an indoor kitchen available if a group wants to take advantage of these as well.
